The Justice Department has a new approach for tackling the highly serious issue of human trafficking. As announced by U..S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, these new tactics will be unified on a national level, which the department hopes will lead to a powerful movement against one of the most insidious crimes that still runs rampant today.
On Dec. 3, 2021, President Biden announced the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, a new policy that spanned across agencies. It is this action plan that the Justice Department’s new strategy is drawn from. This new approach to the human trafficking problem is called the National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, and it is in accordance with the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
A Holistic Approach
The National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking is highly ambitious, to say the least. But the vast majority of policymakers would say that this is rightfully so as it deals with such a grave issue.
The new policies take on an exceptionally wide scope, taking on human trafficking from every conceivable angle. Among the top goals of the new strategy is to build up the Justice Department’s ability to stop these instances of human trafficking before they even occur.
The strategy is also geared towards enhanced capacity for prosecution against these cases so there is less congestion in the courts. Additionally, the State Department is also focusing on the protection and support of the survivors and victims of these heinous crimes.
It is unfortunate that those who are the most vulnerable are exactly those who are targeted by human traffickers. The damage done by these crimes is so deep that it’s difficult to help those who need it most. That’s why the State Department is doubling down on its efforts to put an end to human trafficking everywhere.
