A San Diego native, Alanna Rutan earned her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law with a certified concentration in Civil Litigation.
During law school Ms. Rutan served on the board of USD’s International Law Society, and gained valuable experience representing indigent clients as part of USD’s clinic program. Ms. Rutan worked in both the Civil and Immigration clinics at USD, and gained additional working experience as a law clerk for a Business and Corporate finance law firm and an Insurance Defense firm while in school.
Before embarking on her legal career, Ms. Rutan enjoyed a successful collegiate and professional volleyball career (collecting numerous academic awards along the way). While attending St. John’s University in NYC, Ms. Rutan competed on the school’s volleyball team that won the Big East Conference Championship in 2006 and 2007. The 2007 finished season with a 33-4 record, and the team made it to the Sweet 16 round for the first time in school history. Ms. Rutan was honored as a Big East Academic All-Star each year, was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society and received the Provost’s Achievement Award. Ms. Rutan completed her undergraduate education at the University of California San Diego, where she earned a degree in Psychology. Ms. Rutan also competed on UCSD’s volleyball team that made it to the NCAA tournament, and finished each season nationally ranked in the top 25.
After graduating from college, Ms. Rutan’s professional volleyball career took her to Europe where she competed for stints in Slovenia and the UAE before moving to Southern Italy to play for GAP Volley. While living in Italy Ms. Rutan learned to speak conversational Italian, and continues to be guided by the phrase, “a chi vuole, non mancano modi!” Roughly translated, “where there is a will, there is a way” which sums up Ms. Rutan’s resourcefulness and determination in the courtroom.
Ms. Rutan is admitted to practice law before the courts of California and the United States District for the Southern District of California. She is a member of the San Diego County Bar Association and the California Young Lawyers Association
